Up, Up and Away Project: Young Educators Project
Aims
The Young Educators Project is integral to the Up, Up and Away project. We plan to develop a 1 day and 2 day workshop package for young adults with Down Syndrome to deliver to students on health and social care courses at NSW universities.
Objectives
We have commenced this work by undertaking a broad "scoping/research" exercise looking at what information and education would be useful to health and social care students in the area of Down Syndrom (and intellectual disability issues in general) i.e. we need to assess the "demand" and forge links/make contacts sot that the final workshops will be relevant to academic curricula and therfore marketable to academic institutions.
7 "Young Educators" (young people with Down Syndrome aged between 18 and 25 years) have been recruited to work with consultants to produce one day and two day workshops on Down Syndrome and intellectual disability.
The details of the work will be agreed with consultants and informed by the research conducted prior. Young educators will be working with consultants for 8 sessions of 3 hours per session.
A YEP steering group consisting of the project supervisor, project researcher, consultants and a representative from the Young Educators will advise and support the project work.
Parents are invited to the first meeting on 12th May 2008 to ensure that support and saftey issues are discussed and covered.
