Learning, education and schooling

Students with Down syndrome are enrolled in every type of educational setting throughout NSW, and in many other parts of the world. While many teachers have had little or no experience in meeting the educational needs of a student with Down syndrome, there are many teachers and schools that have been doing it well for many years.  There is now a large range of resources, products and reading material readily available to support students with Down syndrome and their teachers in all educational settings - more than one school or one family could ever use.

These pages will help you to locate resources that will help you to capitalise on the substantial research that has enlightened educational practice for many years, and the experience of those schools and teachers.

Professional Education for Teachers

Down Syndrome NSW offers a range of one-day workshops and seminar events for preschool, primary and secondary teachers  and other school personnel across NSW each year.  Each of the events is advertised on this website (under the What's On? menu, in our monthly Update, and by email to schools in the relevant region. We do not currently have the capacity to visit schools individually, but teachers are welcome to call on 9683 4333 or to email info@dsansw.org.au to communicate with our Information and Support staff, and staff of member schools can borrow from our library.

Affiliate (Group) membership of Down Syndrome NSW

Schools are welcome to take out an Affiliate (Group) membership of Down Syndrome NSW, giving access to our library of books, periodicals, videos and other materials, member discounts for events, multiple copies of periodicals,  and other membership services.  Application forms are available here.
